SAUL “Canelo” ALVAREZ vs TERENCE “Bud” CRAWFORD: Chi detta il ritmo vince!

 Questa notte all’Allegiant Stadium di Las Vegas CANELO vs CRAWFORD, per il titolo dei Supermedi, in palio le Cinture WBC, WBO, IBF, detenute ad oggi da CANELO 35 anni.

Ieri venerdì, alle operazioni di peso, identici sulla bilancia: 167,5 Libbre= 76 Kg circa.

Il messicano CANELO è asceso in modo spettacolare alla grande boxe all’inizio della sua carriera con una grande operazione di marketing ben pianificata dal fondatore del WBC – JOSÉ SULAIMAN- ottimo leader per tutto il movimento della boxe internazionale, e lui stesso molto messicano. E i pugili messicani da JULIO CAESER CHAVEZ Sr., hanno conquistato la nomea di essere dei guerrieri, con quello stile, non esclusivo dei messicani, impavido di venire avanti.

I nomi eccellenti per loro imprese, di grandi professionisti, indimenticabili, qui alla spicciola mi piace ricordare ERIK MORALES, ANTONIO BARRERA, JUAN MANUEL MARQUEZ, JOSÉ NAPOLES, CARLOS ZARATE, SALVADOR SANCHEZ.

Un parterre straordinario che dopo OSCAR DE LA HOYA, nato negli USA, con tanto onore di famiglia messicana sin dalla sua Medaglia d’Oro alle Olimpiadi di Barcellona nel 1992 per gli USA – sino a tutto cuore in memorabili match Pro, con quello spirito guerriero di chi non ha mai evitato nessuno, lo ha consacrato tra le leggende dei Pesi Welter di sempre.

Ha guadagnato una marea di soldi. Ha seminato fascino tra le fans di tutto il pianeta. Tanto genio, a tratti tanta sregolatezza. Nessuno è perfetto. Oggi si è perfezionato, mantenendo quella leggerezza di un carattere tanto estroverso quanto sincero nelle sue esternazioni. É un ottimo organizzatore di boxe capace di intessere relazioni fondamentali per la boxe mondiale. CANELO, grazie a DE LA HOYA firmò un contratto di 360 milioni con DAZN, era il 2018 e CANELO aveva 28 anni.

CANELO forse il più giovane esordiente Pro a soli 15 anni nei Pesi Welter.

JOSÉ SULAIMAN, presidente del WBC, ha letteralmente allevato quel figlio di Guadalajara, il migliore dei sette fratelli, di cui tre in carriera. Del resto, avere un americano/messicano star mondiale della boxe quale OSCAR DE L A HOYA, voleva dire tenere alta l’attenzione su quel patrimonio di popolarità che i Campioni messicani avevano faticosamente conquistato.

CANELO senza dubbio ben guidato, ma senza aver mai davvero soddisfatto il palato fine di chi ama la grande boxe, con vittorie nette, siano esse ai punti o prima del limite. Avversari modesti o per troppo lomtani dai loro anni migliori.

Intendo dire che non ha lasciato il segno, quell’iperbole sul quadrato, come invece i suoi connazionali in match epici. CANELO rimarrà sempre colui che non ha saputo perdere vs il grande kazako GENNADY “GGG” GOLOVKIN. Decisamente vittorioso in due match su 3. Il terzo arrivato troppo tardi e dopo due frustranti verdetti “sbagliati”.

Domani sera CANELO, star messicana, di popolarità mondiale che in pratica decide i suoi avversari, e determina le quotazioni della sua borsa e certo quella suo avversario, entrerà nel ring di Las Vegas con l’eccellente Campione tutto americano, TERENCE “Bud” CRAWFORD 38 anni, il prossimo 28 settembre, nato nel Nebraska, dai Pesi Leggeri sino a meraviglioso Peso Welter che domani notte arriva ben strutturato a competere nei Pesi Super Medi.

BUD ha colto l’occasione della vita di guadagnare una somma mai vista in tutta la sua carriera, nonostante abbia conquistato gli stessi titoli in palio di questa prossima notte nella categoria di Peso a lui tanto superiore.

BUD, lungo e secco è diventato un bel torello, voglio che mantenga quella mobilità necessaria a rendere il match difficile per il compatto CANELO. Dovrà lavorare molto. Il messicano ha una bella mascella granitica, ma se l’americano detta il ritmo, il messicano poco potrà. E la vittoria per CRAWFORD non è poi così improbabile.

CANELO record: 63-2-2, 39 KO, mentre il record di CRAWFORD è 41-0-0, 31 KO. Entrambi non hanno mai subito un KO.

Questa notte che richiama tutto il mondo degli appassionati, è organizzata per la prima volta da TURKI ALALSHIKH di Ryadh Season insieme al promoter di UFC e MMA, DANA WHITE che con questo evento mondiale trasmesso su Netflix entra a gamba tesa nel mondo della boxe.

E intende stravolgerla…a quanto si dice in giro. Affronterò questo argomento approfondendo in altro post. Vi anticipo, il mio pensiero: non mi piace che UFC – MMA entri nella Boxe perché sono due concetti di sport da combattimento, e di pensiero e di azione sul ring, completamenti diversi. Semplice: la Boxe, arte marziale Occidentale è Arte Nobile, e Antica, non ha nulla a che vedere con MMA (arti marziali miste) o appunto UFC (ultimate fighting championship)- Non posso non fare la citazione alla mia telecamera di un grande di tutti i tempi: “Cosa altro fare quando un uomo è a terra? – JOE ”Smokin’ ” FRAZIER-

Le regole sono fondamentali in un incontro di Boxe. UFC tanto rozza viene meno al “rispetto” dell’avversario. Accanirsi su un uomo a terra non ha nulla a che vedere con lo Sport della Boxe.

Quei pochi che ho visto non mi hanno in nessun modo appassionato, come BERNARD HOPKINS UFC e MMA penso che entrambi sono più vicini ad un film porno…che al pugilato, che con grazia direi romantica e le sue regole che quando non vengono rispettate un popolo intero di fans insorge!

La qualità dei fans della Boxe non li ha nessun altro sport. I fans della boxe non si accontentano che il proprio preferito vinca. No. Deve vincere con quell’etica, quelle regole insite proprio nello Sport, di chi aspira ai più alti gradini della Gloria del Pugilato.

Ma TURKI ALALSHIKH di Ryadh Season ha deciso di avere DANA WHITE come patner americano, e dunque per domani notte è così. Del resto sono loro che han messo sul tavolo una montagna di milioni di dollari. Il bello della boxe è che tutto può cambiare. Sperem, subito.

La mia previsione è ancora incerta, queste due superstar che sono da lungo tempo in cima alla classifica tra i migliori, mi creano dubbi che altre volte dissipo in breve. Allora ad alta voce: immagino CANELO che per tutto il match cerca il KO sul corpo troppo mobile di BUD, che se però lo trova, mira al fegato, e le gambe dell’americano si piegano e il match finisce lì. Non da meno BUD la sua ambizione, tutta la positività nelle sue risorse e nell’investimento del superamento fisico che aggiunge forza, spero sia rimasta intatta la velocità necessaria ad esibire tutta l’abilità tecnica e far ballare sino allo sfinimento CANELO, che è lontano da quel gioco di gambe, quell’agilità in un punteggio tutto a suo favore.

Non vedo facile per nessuno dei due il colpo risolutore. Mi auguro un bel match, in stili di boxe tanto diversi.

Del resto quella dei Supermedi è una categoria di Peso che ha lasciato nel recente passato ricordi indelebili: JOE CALZAGHE in primis – il britannico/italiano – al suo angolo papà ENZO CALZAGHE di Sassari- insieme hanno conquistato un record imbattuto di 46 incontri tutti vinti uno in perla all’altro.

In graduatoria, un bel po’ dopo, quell’astuto, dalle azioni non sempre limpide con quelle sembianze da alieno l’americano BERNARD HOPKINS, gliene disse di tutti colori al nostro CALZAGHE prima e dopo il match sul ring di Las Vegas. E nello stesso anno, era novembre 2008, anche lui Made in USA, ROY JONES Jr., viene anche lui annientato da JOE CALZAGHE sul ring del Madison Square Garden. Io c’ero a coprire tutti e due i match. Un trio meraviglioso nella Storia della Grande Boxe.

E niente sino a qui sono ancora indecisa, io di solito così netta.

TERENCE CRAWFORD finalmente “una star americana” globale!

Difesa e attacco impeccabili !

TERENCE ” Bud” CRAWFORD vince UD! Qua il risultato dei giudici:116-112, 115-113, 115-113.

Vittoria meritata, per BUD che mi ha dato ragione sul mio pronostico. Sì certo, BUD non è salito sul ring di Las vegas vs CANELO all’ultimo minuto. L’occasione attesa da una vita, è stata pianificata, nessuna coincidenza, nessun casaulità. Verdetto chiaro, pulito ora con  il raggiungimento nei Pesi Supermedi è INDISCUSSO Campione in 3 categorie di Peso!

Gran movimento di gambe dell’americano, esalta l’andatura incerta e più volte lascia CANELO con l’azione sospesa. CRAWFORD ha un angolo che lo incita a fare di più, l’incognita dei cartellini, in una Las Vegas sempre a favore di CANELO, meglio abbondare ! (vedi Canelo vs GGG)

BUD attacca preciso, fulmineo in un gioco di gambe che il messicano non riesce a dominare, non ha repliche. CANELO elefantiaco di fronte all’americano, in evidenza tutte le sue lacune che con avversari inferiori ha potuto confondere.

Una grande notte per il Pugilato per gli USA, da troppo tempo esangue di Campioni, e da stanotte CRAWFORD sul trono, come negli anni migliori un bel rapresentante in una categoria di peso tanto popolare, i Supermedi, quanto equilibrata in spettacolarità e azione.

BUD è stato l’atleta, il Campione, il Combattente che sapevo avere il potenziale di vincere CANELO, ma spesso non è solo sul ring che si determina il verdetto.

Intendo, le incognite umane prima di una grande prestazione, se anche la sera dell’incontro avrai tutta quell’adrenalina necessaria, se la fede nelle probabilità di vincere ti sorregge sino alla fine ed altri penisieri arrovellano, che frullano nella testa che non sono meno importanti delle incognite del ring che il tuo avversario, è lì, pronto a riservarti.

Nel 12° round in un assolo CRAWFORD continua a sfornare combinazioni a raffica, mentre un frustrato ALVAREZ cerca il colpo decisivo.

Una storica notte di grande boxe, CRAWFORD detrona  CANELO!

BUD al microfono ha ringraziato Dio e ha riconosciuto CANELO grande combattente. Ringraziando tutti sostenitori e detrattori, ora non ha programmi per il futuro. Beh sì il suo compleanno il prossimo 28 settembre…per ora si è fatto un bel regalino! Potrebbe anche lasciare la Boxe. A 38 anni si può.

CANELO si mostra onesto e di classe nella sconfitta, mentre il suo regno indiscusso da campione dei pesi Supermedi giunge al termine.

SAUL “Canelo” ALVAREZ vs TERENCE “Bud” CRAWFORD: Whoever sets the pace wins!

Tonight at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, CANELO vs. CRAWFORD, for the Super Middleweight title, will battle it out for the WBC, WBO, and IBF belts, currently held by CANELO at 35 years.

Yesterday, Friday, at the weigh-in, they weighed in identically: 167.5 pounds = approximately 76 Kg.

Mexican CANELO made a spectacular ascent to the top boxing ranks early in his career, thanks to a well-planned marketing campaign by WBC founder JOSÉ SULAIMAN, an excellent leader for the entire international boxing movement, and himself a very Mexican. And since JULIO CAESAR CHÁVEZ Sr., Mexican boxers have earned a reputation as warriors, with that fearless style, not exclusive to Mexicans.

The names of great professionals, unforgettable for their feats, are remarkable. Here, I like to mention in passing: ERIK MORALES, ANTONIO BARRERA, JUAN MANUEL MÁRQUEZ, JOSÉ NAPOLES, CARLOS ZARATE, and SALVADOR SANCHEZ.

An extraordinary lineup that, after OSCAR DE LA HOYA, born in the USA, with so much Mexican family honor since his Gold Medal at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics for the USA—who gave his all in memorable pro matches, with that warrior spirit of one who never shied away from anyone—has established him as one of the legends of welterweights of all time.

He has earned a ton of money. He has sown fascination among fans across the planet. So much genius, so much recklessness at times. No one is perfect. Today, he has perfected himself, maintaining the lightness of a character as extroverted as he is sincere in his expressions. He’s an excellent boxing promoter, capable of building relationships that are crucial to world boxing. Thanks to De La Hoya, Canelo signed a $360 million contract with DAZN. It was 2018, and Canelo was 28 years old.

Canelo was perhaps the youngest pro debutant at just 15 years old at Welterweight.

José Sulaiman, president of the WBC, literally raised that son of Guadalajara, the best of seven brothers, three of whom were already in their prime. After all, having an American/Mexican world boxing star like Oscar De La Hoya meant keeping the spotlight on the legacy of popularity that the Mexican Champions had worked so hard to earn.

Canelo was undoubtedly well-led, but he never truly satisfied the refined tastes of those who love Great Boxing, with clear victories, whether on points or within the limit. Opponents were modest, or were too many years later in their prime.

I mean, he didn’t leave his mark, that hyperbole in the ring, like his compatriots did in epic fights. CANELO will always be the one who couldn’t lose against the great Kazakh GENNADY “GGG” GOLOVKIN. He was decisively victorious in two of his three fights. The third came too late and after two frustrating “wrong” verdicts.

Tomorrow night, CANELO, a Mexican star with worldwide popularity who practically decides his opponents, determines his stock market value, and certainly that of his opponent, will enter the Las Vegas ring with the excellent All-American Champion, TERENCE “Bud” CRAWFORD, 38, on September 28th. Born in Nebraska, he has been a wonderful lightweight up to welterweight fighter, and tomorrow night, he arrives fully equipped to compete at Super Middleweight.

BUD seized the opportunity of a lifetime to earn a sum unheard of in his entire career, despite having captured the same titles up for grabs this coming night in a weight class far superior to his.

Bud, long and lean, has become a fine bull; I want him to maintain the mobility needed to make this fight difficult for the compact CANELO. He’ll have to work hard. The Mexican has a beautiful, granite-like jaw, but if the American dictates the pace, the Mexican will have little chance of success. And victory for CRAWFORD isn’t all that unlikely.

CANELO’s record: 63-2-2, 39 KOs, while CRAWFORD’s record is 41-0-0, 31 KOs. Both have never suffered a KO.

This night, which attracts fans worldwide, is promoted for the first time by TURKI ALALSHIKH of Riyadh Season together with UFC and MMA promoter DANA WHITE, who enters the boxing world with this global event broadcast on Netflix.

And he intends to overturn it… According to rumors. I’ll delve deeper into this topic in another post. Let me give you my thoughts: I don’t like UFC and MMA being mixed up in Boxing because they are two completely different concepts of combat sports, and of thought and action in the ring. Simple: Boxing, a Western martial art, is a noble and ancient art; it has nothing to do with MMA (mixed martial arts) or UFC (ultimate fighting championship). I can’t help but quote an all-time great into my camera: “What else do you do when a man is down?” – JOE “Smokin'” FRAZIER.

Rules are fundamental in a boxing fight. UFC, so crude, fails to “respect” the rules. Opponent. Attacking a downed man has nothing to do with the sport of boxing.

The few I’ve seen haven’t fascinated me in the slightest. Like BERNARD HOPKINS, UFC and MMA are both closer to a porn movie…than boxing, which, I would call romantic grace, and its rules, when broken, an entire nation of fans rebels!

Boxing fans aren’t the same quality as any other sport. Boxing fans aren’t satisfied with their favorite winning. No. He/She must win with the ethics, those rules inherent in the sport, of those who aspire to the highest steps of Boxing Glory.

But TURKI ALALSHIKH of Ryadh Season has decided to have DANA WHITE as his American partner, and so tonight is the night. After all, they’re the ones who put a mountain of millions of dollars on the table. The beauty of boxing is that everything can change. Let’s hope, right away for a real Boxing promoter.

My prediction is still uncertain; these two superstars, who have long been at the top of the list, create doubts that I quickly dispel.

So, out loud: I imagine CANELO searching for the knockout throughout the fight on BUD’s overly mobile body. If he finds it, however, he aims for the liver, and the American’s legs buckle, and the match ends there. It was Dad Garbelli’s best punch. No less so in BUD, his ambition, all the positivity in his resources, and in the investment of physical overcoming that adds strength. I hope the speed needed to display all his technical skill and make CANELO dance to exhaustion has remained intact; he is far from that footwork, that agility in a scoreline entirely in his favor.

I don’t see the decisive blow being easy for either of them. I hope it will be a great fight, with such different boxing styles.

After all, the Super Middleweight division has left indelible memories in the recent past: JOE CALZAGHE, first and foremost – the British/Italian – in his corner, his father ENZO CALZAGHE from Sassari – together they achieved an undefeated record of 46 fights, all won by a slew of opponents.

A good bit further down the rankings, that crafty, not-always-clear-action, alien-looking American BERNARD HOPKINS, gave our CALZAGHE a good beating before and after the fight in the Las Vegas ring. And in the same year, November 2008, another American, ROY JONES Jr., was also annihilated by JOE CALZAGHE in the Madison Square Garden ring. I was there covering both fights.  A tremendous trio in the history of Great Boxing.

And so far, I’m still undecided, as I’m usually so clear-cut.

TERENCE “Bud” CRAWFORD wins UD! Here are the judges’ scores: 116-112, 115-113, 115-113.
A well-deserved victory for BUD, who proved me right in my prediction. Yes, of course, BUD didn’t enter the ring in Las Vegas vs Canelo at the last minute.

The opportunity he’d been waiting for a lifetime was planned, no coincidence, no casual. A clear, clean verdict, now with his achievement at Super Middleweight, he’s UNDISPUTED Champion in three weight divisions!
Great footwork from the American, he highlights his hesitant pace and repeatedly leaves Canelo hanging.

CRAWFORD has a corner that encourages him to do more: the unknown factor of the scorecards. In a Las Vegas that always favors CANELO, it’s better to be generous! (See Canelo vs. GGG.)
BUD attacks with precision, lightning-fast footwork that the Mexican can’t control; he has no replies. CANELO is gigantic against the American, exposing all his shortcomings, which he’s been able to confuse with inferior opponents.

A great night for US boxing, too long devoid of Champions, and tonight sees CRAWFORD reign supreme, as in his best years, a fine representative in a weight class as popular as Super Middleweight, balanced in spectacle and action.

BUD is the athlete, the Champion, the Fighter.

I knew had the potential to defeat CANELO, but often it’s not just in the ring that the verdict is determined.
I mean, the human unknowns before a great performance, whether you’ll have all the adrenaline you need on the night of the fight, whether your faith in your chances of winning sustains you until the end, and other worries swirl around in your head that are no less important than the unknowns of the ring that your opponent is there, ready to throw at you.

In the twelfth round, CRAWFORD continues to dish out a flurry of combinations, while a frustrated ALVAREZ searches for the decisive blow.

In a great historic night, CRAWFORD dethroned CANELO!

BUD thanked God at the microphone and acknowledged CANELO as a great fighter. Thanking all his supporters and detractors, he now has no plans for the future. Well, yes, his birthday is next September 28th…for now, he’s given himself a nice gift! He might even retire from boxing. At 38, that’s possible.

CANELO shows honesty and class in defeat, as his undisputed reign as Super Middleweight champion comes to an end.
