Amici, ogni anno vi faccio un resoconto dell’anno di pugilato che ci ha lasciato. Quest’anno aggiungerò un categoria “sentimentale”: L’ABBRACCIO DELL’ANNO 2025.

E BOB ARUM che abbraccia VASYL LOMACHENKO è così intenso, così filiale tra due protagonisti che han scritto la Storia della Boxe, non sarà il Miglior Abbraccio, sarà il più “sentito!”.

Solo guardando la foto, lascia stare che so molto dei due, ma il solo fatto che BOB ARUM, 93 anni, è ancora lui il miglior Organizzatore del Mondo, da qualche anno – in tandem con l’inglese FRANK WARREN. BOB ARUM è ancora in piena attività dal 1965 con la sua TOP RANK, quando ha debuttato da avvocato di Muhammad Ali sino ai giorni nostri.

Sotto le sue ali protettive sono passati tra i più grandi Campioni di Boxe anche l’artista della Grande Boxe, l’ucraino VASYL LOMACHENKO.

LOMA, un vero artista talentuoso e disciplinato. Forse troppo disciplinato, molto focalizzato, mai un eccesso. Molto devoto. Riservato. Esplode sul Ring tutte le sue arti. Quando vince non ostenta.

Cresciuto troppo tra i dilettanti, è due volte Medaglia Olimpica a Pechino 2008 e Londra 2012. Un infinità di riconoscimenti. Ma questo lo avevo già detto, al suo debutto tra i Pro.

Il suo debutto ha un numero che sembra rincorrerlo il 12. Ha chiuso la sua carriera in questo appena trascorso giugno 2025, dopo 12 anni di carriera. Ha debuttato il 12 ottobre 2013 quale Pro a Las Vegas. il 12 ottobre è la stessa data di nascita del suo fantastico manager EGIS KLIMAS. Senza contare che ha vinto le Olimpiadi di Londra 2012…!

Come Dilettante se la gioca con il magiaro LASZLO PAPP che ha vinto ben tre Olimpiadi nei Pesi Super Welter e Medi. Ma anche lui non ne poteva più di diventare Professionista! Costretto in quella gabbia della Cortina di Ferro in Ungheria, imposta dall’Unione Sovietica. Ve l’ho citato, come riporto nel mio libro e qui e là nei miei scritti, perché è stato il miglior Campione che mio Padre abbia combattuto e vinto. Papà GIANCARLO che bramava solo i migliori, “sentiva” Laszlo, avrebbe voluto che i suoi avversari fossero tutti come LASZLO PAPP…

Se la carriera di LOMACHENKO nei Pro fosse iniziata nel 2008, Il suo palmares di 18 vittorie, 12 via KO, 3 sconfitte, sarebbe di molto, più ricco.

Ma non sottovaluterò la sua carriera di Pro perchè ci ha regalato tale tecnica, trasformata in chirurgica perfezione, di esaltazione danzante, tale la leggerezza e l’incisività dei colpi, in un movimento continuo da ogni lato del quadrato, da ogni angolo faceva apparire soluzioni inaspettate.

Il Grande LOMACHENKO dai Pesi Piuma, ai Pesi Super Piuma, ai Pesi Leggeri , categorie dove la mobilità, l’estro, la geometria, la rapidità, sono il grande show. LOMA chiude la sua carriera in questo giugno appena trascorso, volato in fretta.

LOMA scippato da tre Cinture, WBC IBF IBO nel maggio del 2023, dove ha dominato nella cattedrale della Boxe il Madison Square Garden, nei Pesi Leggeri DEVIN HANEY. Ma anche questo l’ho già scritto. Se n’è riprese due, IBF e IBO, volando in Australia lo scorso maggio 2024, e riconquistandole dal Campione di casa GEORGE KAMBOSOS e riportate a casa Ucraina, dove tra tanta sofferenza, la vittoria sul ring di uno dei suoi tra i più grandi rappresentanti, è speranza di vittoria sui malefici di una guerra assurda.

Volevamo il match con GERVONTA “Tank” DAVIS…ma il proverbio dice: “ogni cosa a suo tempo”. Il tempo di VASYL LOMACHENKO è scaduto così lui ci ha fatto sapere.

Va ringraziato EGIS KLIMAS, manager lituano, di stanza negli USA, per averlo condotto negli USA. KLIMAS ha saputo, sa dare il sogno ai Pugili dell’Europa dell’Est, di nuova generazione.

E non c’è dubbio che sono stati e sono loro i migliori rappresentanti non solo della nostra “antica Europa“, eh dai…! “Vecchia Europa”, con così tanta Storia, non si addice. É una sottigliezza incisiva…

I campioni Ucraini hanno quella luce dell’Est Europa che emana una tale energia, una scia sgorgata dai Fratelli KLITSCHKO che hanno acceso la Grande Boxe e continua da oltre trent’anni ad illuminare i migliori ring del mondo.

LOMACHENKO ha trasmesso sul Ring quell’antico sapere dei Grandi Campioni che sanno combattere, che sanno difendere le loro radici, per entrare a far parte della Storia della Boxe. E l’Ucraina ci ha regalato, ci regala straordinari protagonisti.

Quelle sofferenze disumane provocate da PUTIN a tutto il popolo ucraino, sono qualcosa che i nostri padri, certo e madri, mai ci avrebbero augurato di dover vivere.

Domani 10 luglio a Roma, iniziano i lavori per la Conferenza della ricostruzione dell’Ucraina. Non solo un popolo di Eroi, ma di grandi Atleti che non hanno mai smesso di essere parte integrante del loro popolo e aiutarlo e soffrire con loro.

Europa tutta, Occidente tutto forti insieme per l’Ucraina!

Omaggiare LOMACHENKO è facile. É stato un immenso eclettico protagonista, e vedere quell’Abbraccio così spontaneo tra “due vecchi”, chi di veneranda età come BOB ARUM 93 anni e LOMACHENKO 37 anni, dove la differenza è che resistere fuori dal Ring è molto più facile che salirci e combattere, e il fattore Tempo o Padre tempo sul Ring, non lascia alternativa.

Quell’abbraccio non è la fine di nulla. A 93 anni si va verso l’eternità …Con i 37 anni di LOMA si va verso un altro futuro, dove il passato è già scritto nell’eternità del nostro amato Sport, la Boxe.

“LAS VEGAS (5 giugno 2025) — Dopo una straordinaria carriera professionistica, il grande Vasiliy Lomachenko ha annunciato il suo ritiro dalla boxe. Top Rank ha avuto il privilegio di promuovere “Loma” per l’intera durata del suo storico percorso, che ha incluso titoli mondiali in tre categorie di peso e il riconoscimento come il più importante pugile pound-for-pound di questo sport.

Lomachenko ha eguagliato un record di pugilato vincendo un titolo mondiale al suo terzo incontro da professionista ed è diventato campione del mondo in tre categorie di peso in 12 incontri, stabilendo un nuovo standard in questo sport.

Prima di diventare professionista, vantava un incomparabile record dilettantistico di 396 vittorie e 1 sconfitta, vincendo due medaglie d’oro olimpiche e mondiali per la sua nativa Ucraina. Nel 2022, ha messo in pausa la sua carriera, tornando in patria per unirsi a un battaglione di difesa territoriale dopo l’invasione russa.

Il presidente di Top Rank, Bob Arum, ha dichiarato: “È stato un onore per tutti noi di Top Rank promuovere la carriera pugilistica professionistica di Vasiliy Lomachenko. È stato un campione generazionale e ci mancherà la sua partecipazione a questo sport”.

I will add to my best 2025 “Hug of the Year”: BOB ARUM and VASYL LOMACHENKO!

Friends, every year I give you a review of the boxing year that has passed. This year, I’ll add a “sentimental” division: THE HUGGING OF THE YEAR 2025.

And BOB ARUM embracing VASYL LOMACHENKO is so intense, so filial between two protagonists who have written the history of boxing, it won’t be the Best Hug, it will be the most “heartfelt!”

Just looking at the photo, let alone knowing a lot about the two, but the simple fact that BOB ARUM, 93, is still the best promoter in the world, for a few years now, in tandem with the Englishman FRANK WARREN.

BOB ARUM has been in full swing since 1965 with his TOP RANK, when he debuted as Muhammad Ali’s lawyer, up to the present day.
Among the greatest boxing champions, the artist of Great Boxing, the Ukrainian VASYL LOMACHENKO, also passed under his protective wings.
LOMA, a truly talented and disciplined artist. Perhaps too disciplined, very focused, never excessive. Very devoted. Reserved. He unleashes all his talents in the ring. When he wins, he doesn’t show off.

Having grown up in the amateur ranks, he is a two-time Olympic medalist, having won at Beijing 2008 and London 2012. Countless accolades. But I’ve already said this, on his pro debut.

His debut has a number that seems to chase him: 12. He ended his career this past June 2025, after a 12-year career. He made his pro debut on October 12, 2013, in Las Vegas. October 12 is the same date as his fantastic manager EGIS KLIMAS’s birth. Not to mention that he won the 2012 London Olympics…!
As an amateur, he’s up there with the Hungarian Laszlo Papp, who won three Olympics at Super Welterweight and Middleweight. But he, too, couldn’t stand turning pro! Forced into that cage of the Iron Curtain in Hungary, imposed by the Soviet Union.

I mentioned him, as I did in my book and here and there in my writings, because he was the best champion my father ever fought and defeated. Dad Giancarlo, who only wanted the best, “sensed” Laszlo, wishing all his opponents were like Laszlo Papp…

If LOMACHENKO’s pro career had begun in 2008, his record of 18 wins, 12 by knockout, and 3 losses would be much, much richer.
But I won’t underestimate his pro career because he gifted us with such technique, transformed into surgical perfection, of dancing exaltation, such lightness and incisiveness of his strikes, in a continuous movement from every side of the ring, from every angle, that he made unexpected solutions appear.

The Great LOMACHENKO from Featherweight to Super Featherweight to Lightweight, divisions where mobility, flair, geometry, and speed are the great show. LOMA ended his career this past June, which flew by quickly.

LOMA was stripped of three belts, WBC, IBF, and IBO in May 2023, where he dominated in the cathedral of boxing, Madison Square Garden, at Lightweight DEVIN HANEY. And as I’ve already written about that too. LOMA took back two, IBF and IBO belts, flying to Australia last May 2024, and regained them from homegrown champion GEORGE KAMBOSOS.

He brought them back to Ukraine, where, amid much suffering, the victory in the ring of one of its greatest representatives offers hope for victory over the evils of an absurd war.

We wanted the match with GERVONTA “Tank” DAVIS…but the saying goes: “all things come in their own time.” VASYL LOMACHENKO’s time is up, so he let us know.

Thanks go to EGIS KLIMAS, a Lithuanian manager based in the US, for bringing him to the USA. KLIMAS knew, and knows, how to give dreams to the new generation of Eastern European fighters.
And there’s no doubt that they were and are the best representatives not only of our “Antic Europe”—come on…! “Old Europe,” with so much history, is not appropriate. It’s a powerful subtlety…

The Ukrainian Champions have that Eastern European light that emanates such energy, a trail that flows from the KLITSCHKO Brothers, who ignited Great Boxing and have continued to illuminate the world’s prize rings for over thirty years.
LOMACHENKO transmitted to the ring that ancient knowledge of Great Fighters who know how to fight, who know how to defend their roots, to become part of Boxing History.

And Ukraine has given us, and continues to give us, extraordinary champions.
The inhuman suffering inflicted by PUTIN on all the Ukrainian people is something our fathers, and certainly our mothers, would never have wished for us to experience.

Tomorrow, July 10th, in Rome, the work for the Conference on the Reconstruction of Ukraine begins. Not just a nation of Heroes, but of great Athletes who have never ceased to be an integral part of their people, helping them and suffering with them.

All of Europe, all of the West, strong together for Ukraine!

Paying homage to LOMACHENKO is easy. He was an immensely eclectic protagonist, and seeing that spontaneous embrace between “two old men”, of venerable age like BOB ARUM, 93 years old, and LOMACHENKO, 37 years old, where the difference is that resisting outside the Ring is much easier.

It’s easier than climbing up and fighting, and the factor of Time, or Father Time in the Ring, leaves no alternative.

That embrace isn’t the end of anything. At 93, we’re moving toward eternity… With LOMA’s 37th birthday, we’re moving toward another future, where the past is already written in the eternity of our beloved sport, boxing.

Just looking at the photo, let alone knowing a lot about the two, but the simple fact that BOB ARUM, 93, is still the best promoter in the world, for a few years now, in tandem with the Englishman FRANK WARREN.

Having grown up in the amateur ranks, he is a two-time Olympic medalist, having won at Beijing 2008 and London 2012. Countless accolades. But I’ve already said this, on his pro debut.

I mentioned him, as I did in my book and here and there in my writings, because he was the best champion my father ever fought and defeated. Dad Giancarlo, who only wanted the best, “sensed” Laszlo, wishing all his opponents were like Laszlo Papp…

The Great LOMACHENKO from Featherweight to Super Featherweight to Lightweight, divisions where mobility, flair, geometry, and speed are the great show. LOMA ended his career this past June, which flew by quickly.

He brought them back to Ukraine, where, amid much suffering, the victory in the ring of one of its greatest representatives offers hope for victory over the evils of an absurd war.

We wanted the match with GERVONTA “Tank” DAVIS…but the saying goes: “all things come in their own time.” VASYL LOMACHENKO’s time is up, so he let us know.

And Ukraine has given us, and continues to give us, extraordinary champions. The inhuman suffering inflicted by PUTIN on all the Ukrainian people is something our fathers, and certainly our mothers, would never have wished for us to experience.

Tomorrow, July 10th, in Rome, the work for the Conference on the Reconstruction of Ukraine begins. Not just a nation of Heroes, but of great Athletes who have never ceased to be an integral part of their people, helping them and suffering with them.

Paying homage to LOMACHENKO is easy. He was an immensely eclectic protagonist, and seeing that spontaneous embrace between “two old men”, of venerable age like BOB ARUM, 93 years old, and LOMACHENKO, 37 years old, where the difference is that resisting outside the Ring is much easier.

It’s easier than climbing up and fighting, and the factor of Time, or Father Time in the Ring, leaves no alternative.

That embrace isn’t the end of anything. At 93, we’re moving toward eternity… With LOMA’s 37th birthday, we’re moving toward another future, where the past is already written in the eternity of our beloved sport, boxing.
