THE GLORY AND THE PASSION -My Homage to the Boxing World- Synopsis Boxing has been and remains the ticket to upward social and economic mobility. No sport has done to such to reflect the values of democracy and the goal of equal opportunity where motivation, discipline, hard work and self-empowerment, in general, trump money, power, and political connections. Boxing is, in essence, the people’s sport---a sport for all people the world over, regardless of their station in life. This is the extraordinary journey of Gianna Garbelli, filmmaker from Milano, into the fascinating world of boxing. The daughter and grand daughter of boxing champions, Ms Garbelli has a natural familiarity with the passions and poetry of pugilism. Her affection and respect for performers of the noble art resonate in these wide ranging conversations that encompass over 70 episodes. Many of the men whom she sits down with have overcome incredible adversity in life and have made endless sacrifices to become the best in this, the hardest and most unforgiving of all sports. "You need a shove to get into the ring and to be a great champ!," she exclaims. In her masterwork Gianna assembles and interacts with a wide cast of boxers and boxing cognoscenti. The Oscar-winning screenwriter Budd Schulberg is one of her guiding lights; and his immortal words spoken by the late, great Marlon Brando in On the Waterfront have become boxing's mantra--- "I could have been a contender!" Many other encounters with renowned personalities encompass each episode. This emotionally-charged epic documentary series dances with powerful images and music garnered from all over the world. Cameras roll in towns from Las Vegas to New York City, Berlin, Manchester, Paris, Mannheim, London, Hamburg, Canastota, Dortmund, Atlantic City, Los Angeles, Stuttgart, Boston, Nurenberg, Tampa, Easton, Milan, Rome, the Olympic Games in Beijing, Zurich, Helsinki, Philadelphia, Atlanta, and Cardiff, Monte Carlo… The series interviews numerous representatives from Africa, North, Central and South America, Mexico, Asia, Australia, and Europe. The sounds of boxing boom everywhere. The author is also at ringside, capturing the words of boxing’s family, and pays homage to many of fighters from the past to the present—with an eye, also, to future champions. In this spellbinding tour of force, Gianna Garbelli makes a lasting contribution to documentary filmmaking and to the sport of boxing. With her knowledge and enthusiasm, Gianna brings the viewer inside the ropes and shows us why this sport will never take the count! giannamariagarbelli©copyright2001allrightsreserved
